Tendon inflammation: how to relieve symptoms

Tendonitis, or inflammation of the tendons, often affects the heels and biceps. The main causes are repetitive and incorrect movements, poor posture, or the pressure exerted by shoes on the heels. On the other hand, sprains and traumas are also the cause of medium and long-term tendon pathologies.

Learn to recognize tendonitis

The most obvious symptom is pain. It is felt when pressure is applied or when movements are made that cause the tendon to move; joint stiffness, however, is also a major symptom.

The best way to relieve the symptoms of tendonitis is to rest or immobilize the inflamed tendon with the help of rigid splints. If the pain is in the Achilles tendon (located in the heel), it will also be good to change shoes.

One of the first things to do is try to reduce pain and inflammation. In severe cases, local anti-inflammatories such as gels or creams will be used. For faster healing, it will be equally important to reduce the movement of the affected area. The application of hot or cold compresses is also useful to relieve pain.

It should be borne in mind that chronic tendonitis can lead to tendon atrophy with irreparable damage. However,  for those suffering from this disease, there are several ways to relieve pain and symptoms, including in a natural way.

Inflammation of the tendons: how to relieve the pain?

  • The first thing we recommend, if you do sports, is to change some habits. Avoid playing sports that involve excessive strain on the already inflamed tendons. Instead, try relaxation exercises, such as yoga, which help reduce pain. In this way you will not give up physical activity and at the same time you will let the tendons rest.
  • On the other hand, to reduce pain and inflammation of the tendons, you can resort to localized heat or cold therapy. Apply a hot or cold pack to the affected area for 20 minutes. Continue with this therapy until the pain is gone. You can use warm cloths or a bag containing ice.
  • Another remedy is fish oil supplements or increased consumption of this food. This way you will get a good amount of Omega 3 and natural anti-inflammatories. They have a positive effect on tendonitis and also fight swelling.
  • If you suffer from tendonitis, rest is the ideal solution. Sleeping at least eight hours a night will facilitate healing of the injured tendon.
