During Sleep, What Happens In Our Brain?
According to studies carried out and published by the Universidad Autónoma de México (UNAM), together with the Clinic of Sleep Disorders, one in three people in the world suffers from sleep disorders.
It is a common ailment that over the days can cause serious problems in the performance of our daily activities. The prolonged lack of sleep, in fact, leads to weakness during the day and difficulty in completing our work, school, domestic or social commitments.
Sleeping is very important for our body, especially for the brain, but why?
What happens in our brain during sleep?
During sleep, the brain continues to work
This is confirmed by some research conducted by Chicago University. The neurons are activated in complete synchrony, only for a few seconds, to process the information collected during the day.
The brain repairs itself
According to some articles published in The Journal of Neuroscience , while we sleep, the cells responsible for producing myelin increase this activity, thus facilitating brain repair.
The brain detoxifies
Some researchers at Rochester University say that while we sleep, the brain activates all the mechanisms to clean up the harmful residues accumulated during the day. This mechanism is called the glymphatic system. It is activated during sleep, in order to eliminate the beta amyloid peptide.
The brain remembers
Some research carried out by California University (UCLA) has shown that during sleep the same regions of the brain that are activated when we have to remember are in function. This activity was comprehensively monitored mainly in three regions: the hippocampus, the entorhinal cortex and the neocortex.
The brain learns
Some studies published in the Journal of Neuroscience argue that while you sleep the brain understands, assimilates and consolidates information and learning of all motor activities.
Advantages for the line
When you don’t get enough sleep, leptin levels drop significantly. It is a protein hormone that inhibits appetite; instead, the levels of ghrelin, a hormone that has the function of stimulating the appetite, increase.
The above suggests that it is very important and absolutely necessary to have regular sleep. A good rest allows us to obtain the right well-being for the body and our brain, thus ensuring a better quality of life.
