Melasma or chloasma is a skin blemish due to spots that appear on the skin of the face.

It is a fairly common skin problem that mainly affects young women who have a fair complexion. In this article we will explain what it is and how to treat melasma.

Characteristics of melasma

This skin problem is particularly associated with female hormone imbalances of progesterone and estrogen.

For this reason, it is more normal for women who are pregnant, who are on birth control pills or who are undergoing hormone therapy during menopause.

To make it appear, exposure to the sun is necessary and for this reason women who live in countries with a tropical climate or who show up during the summer are more likely to suffer from it.

In other cases it appears due to high levels of stress, cosmetic or drug side effects, hereditary factors or thyroid hormone malfunction.

The symptom of melasma is one: a change in the color of the skin of the face, which can cause low self-esteem. The coloring of the complexion almost always becomes a uniform coffee tone.

The spots develop on the forehead, cheeks, nose and upper lip ; they are usually symmetrical, meaning they appear equally on both sides of the face.

Medical treatments can include creams that contain azelaic acid and kojic acid, hydroquinone and tretinoin.

Or exfoliation with topical steroid creams and laser treatments in case the clinical picture is very serious.

In some cases it is recommended to stop the hormonal treatments that cause the problem or to wait for the term of pregnancy to assess whether the symptoms persist.

After proper treatment, melasma usually disappears within a few months at the latest.

However, the problem can recur if the woman becomes pregnant again or starts taking hormones again.

Doctors claim that to prevent these spots, a good protective factor can help a lot  and, at the same time, prevent the development of skin cancer or wrinkles.

Homemade remedies to eliminate melasma

With some ingredients you have at home you can make good natural treatments to eliminate these coffee-colored spots from the face if you are pregnant, if you are taking contraceptives or some menopause drugs.

You should know that melasma develops due to an increase in the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for the coloring of the skin.

Some argue that it mostly affects women with darker complexions, others those with a golden complexion, and still others those with a lighter complexion.

The important thing is that there are natural remedies to cure this aesthetic problem.

  • Homemade Banana Remedy : Mash a banana and apply this puree to the affected areas for 15 minutes. Repeat the treatment four times a week, rinsing with warm water.
  • Homemade eggplant remedy : Cut an eggplant into slices and extract the pulp. Make a paste and apply it to the skin. Leave to act for 15 minutes and remove with water. Repeat the treatment three times a week.
  • Homemade remedy with black balm from Peru : 4-5 drops are enough to add an egg white. Beat well and apply twice a day, in the morning and in the evening.
  • Homemade remedy with hydrogen peroxide: wipe a cotton pad soaked in hydrogen peroxide on your face before going to bed.
  • Melasma Spot Mask : Mix two tablespoons of milk powder, four tablespoons of bee honey and two tablespoons of lemon juice to form a smooth paste. Apply it on your face and leave it on for about 20 minutes. Wash and apply a layer of natural yogurt. Leave on for another 10 minutes and rinse.
  • Homemade onion and vinegar remedy : Chop an onion and add some apple cider vinegar. Apply to the stain and leave for 15 minutes. If it burns or irritates, wash it off immediately.
