Fortunately, there are several tips and tricks that we can put into practice on a regular basis to ensure a clean bed in proper condition.

The following natural solutions represent an economic and natural option in order to keep the mattress in perfect condition and free from microorganisms.

Disinfect the mattress with baking soda

The baking soda is one of the best natural products to perform this type of cleaning.

Its antibacterial and astringent properties are used to eliminate moisture stains as well as unpleasant odors given off by the mattress.

It also acts as a natural detergent, ideal for solving the problem of unexpected leaks of liquids of various kinds.

In this case, we propose to enhance its properties by also using hydrogen peroxide, a very cheap product that we can find in pharmacies.

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons of baking soda (40 g)
  •  1 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide (250 ml)
  • 2 drops of liquid soap

What needs to be done?

  • Add the hydrogen peroxide to the baking soda and mix well.
  • When they are well blended, add two drops of liquid soap and mix until you get a more or less homogeneous mix.
  • Once ready, pour the product into a bottle with a spray nebulizer.
  • Shake well and spray the product on the visible stains of the bed and in the points from which bad smells come.
  • Leave it on until the product has dried or use a hairdryer to let it dry faster.
  • Once dry, scrub with a brush or vacuum cleaner to remove baking soda residue.

Disinfect the mattress with essential oil

  • 1 cup of baking soda (200 g)
  • 8 drops of essential oil (whichever you prefer)
  • 1 medium sieve
  • Portable vacuum cleaner

What needs to be done?

  • Put the baking soda and essential oil in a container with a lid.
  • Shake well for the ingredients to integrate and sift over the area of ​​the mattress you want to clean.
  • Let the product rest for about an hour and use the vacuum cleaner to remove the baking soda.

If this is the case for you and you think the only solution is to buy a new mattress, try the following trick with white vinegar first.

  • ¼ cup of white vinegar (62 ml)
  • ½ cup of baking soda (50 g)
  • 3 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide (30 ml)

What needs to be done?

  • Sprinkle the baking soda on the mattress and sprinkle white vinegar until it becomes effervescent.
  • Clean with a brush or vacuum cleaner to remove excess baking soda.
  • If you notice that the stains persist, moisten a sponge with hydrogen peroxide and rub in circular motions.
  • Leave to dry in the open air or use a hairdryer.

Bleach and disinfect pillowcases and sheets

Pillow cases and sheets are equally important complements of the bed. It is recommended to change them once every two weeks to ensure cleanliness. 

To properly whiten and disinfect them, we can use a little hot water, lemon and vinegar.

Ingredients

  • 1 fresh lemon
  • ½ cup of white vinegar (125 ml)
  • 1 liter of water

What needs to be done?

  • Boil a liter of water and add the white vinegar and lemon juice.
  • Remove from the heat, then dip the pillowcases and sheets and let them soak for about an hour.
  • After this time, rinse in the washing machine.

As you can see, there is no need to procure expensive chemicals to have a flawless, germ-free mattress.

Practice these methods once a month or as often as you see fit.
