Scalp pimples: why do they appear?

Scalp pimples are, in principle, a manifestation of an acneic nature. Although pimples usually appear on other areas of the body (for example, on the face and back), don’t worry if they affect other areas of the skin. The scalp is no exception.

Although from an aesthetic point of view acne on the face creates more inconveniences, from a medical point of view scalp pimples can be more problematic. This is because they often manifest as very annoying pustules and sometimes cause hair loss.

In some cases, scalp pimples are painful, itchy, or burn. In these cases, the ideal is to go to the dermatologist, so that he makes a thorough diagnosis of the problem. In general, however, this form of acne can be managed and treated with natural remedies.

Pimples on the head are usually due to the same underlying causes as any other type of acne. In most cases, they depend on four main factors:

  • Hormonal changes. They may be due to changes occurring during puberty, pregnancy, menstruation or following a medical condition.
  • Heredity and genetics. Scalp pimples are likely to appear when other family members also suffer from them.
  • Climate adaptation problems. It is very common for climate changes, especially when extreme, to lead to the appearance of pimples on the scalp.
  • Allergic reactions. These are produced due to the consumption of certain drugs or foods, or in response to certain chemicals.

Another common cause of the problem is poor hygiene habits, such as frequent hair washing or, on the contrary, their absence. But also the use of accessories not suitable for the scalp. Following this, immune weakness or disease often manifests itself through these rashes.

Not all pimples on the scalp are the same, so they cannot be treated in the same way. The most common types are the following:

  • Red pimples. They require medical advice. They usually indicate an allergic reaction to the use of certain shampoos or chemicals applied to the scalp.
  • Pimples with pus. They indicate the presence of an infection with parasites, fungi or viruses attached to the scalp. They generally cause itching and are due to blocked hair bulbs due to the presence of excess sebum.
  • Sebaceous, or greasy, pimples. They look like a yellowish lump and in some cases cause pain. If not treated properly, they could cause an infection. They are usually due to poor hygiene.
  • Dry pimples. To the touch they resemble a crust. They are due to seborrheic dermatitis and are treatable with an extra dose of hydration.
  • Water bubbles. They are the result of diseases such as dermatitis or chickenpox. They can also be a symptom of an allergic reaction.

Other interesting data

Many times scalp boils are due to an itchy dandruff problem. Scratching constantly causes pimples to appear. In other cases, the cause may be dermatophytosis, a very aggressive infectious fungus, responsible for spots and, in some cases, even for hair loss.

Sometimes pimples on the scalp cause a yellowish suppuration and an unpleasant odor. The latter usually appear in people allergic to gluten. In other cases, pimples bleed as a result of too vigorous scraping, but this is usually not a cause for concern.

Although scalp pimples are not a major problem at first, they do become because this condition can get complicated. The best thing, therefore, is to try to solve it as soon as possible. If the appearance does not convince you or if the disturbances caused by them are important, do not hesitate to consult your doctor.
